Humm Brings Smart EV Charging to La Tour Condominiums with No Upfront Costs for the HOA
20 Charging Stations — Expandable to Serve Every Resident — No Cost to HOA — Second Largest Multifamily Installation in DFW
Project Overview
La Tour Condominiums, a luxury high-rise community in Dallas, TX, faced significant challenges in upgrading its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Humm Energy, a Dallas-Fort Worth-based EV charging provider, offered a cost-effective solution that eliminated the need for a substantial upfront investment and ongoing operational expenses. By transforming the parking garage into a smart charging hub, Humm provided faster, more accessible EV charging for residents, all without any cost to the Homeowners Association (HOA).
The Problem
Home to 90 residences, La Tour had no Level 2 EV charging stations before Humm’s involvement. Built in the 1980s, the building still relied on its original electrical switchgear. Residents and the HOA wanted the ability to charge vehicles in individual parking spaces while also having two common-area chargers available.
However, several obstacles complicated the upgrade:
A significant capital investment was required for electrical infrastructure upgrades, new equipment, and installation.
The system needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing, decades-old electrical infrastructure.
Ongoing operational costs related to maintenance, metering, and billing posed financial challenges.
Our Innovative Solution
Humm Energy’s unique approach eliminates two major barriers to EV adoption for multi-family communities: high upfront costs and ongoing management expenses. Instead of selling equipment, Humm operates on a usage-based revenue model, charging EV drivers based on their usage.
For La Tour, Humm delivered the following improvements:
Electrical Infrastructure Upgrades: Humm technicians completed all necessary electrical work, including installing three new transformers and panel boards to support the expanded system while integrating with the existing infrastructure.
Installation of Charging Stations: A total of 20 Level 2 (48-amp) fast-charging stations were installed—two in common areas and 18 at individual parking spaces. This project ranks as the second-largest multi-family EV charging installation in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, following Humm’s installation at Windrose Tower.
Individual Charging for Every Residence: The system allows each residence to have a dedicated charging station, ensuring convenience and accessibility.
Smart Charging Network: All stations are connected to Humm’s proprietary operating software, enabling remote monitoring, load sharing, access control, usage metering, and automated billing.
No Cost to the HOA
Humm installed, monitors, and maintains the entire EV charging system at no cost to the La Tour HOA. The system is financed by Humm, which generates revenue through modest subscription and usage fees—typically lower than Tesla Supercharger rates -- and a one-time access fee for residents seeking an individual charging station.
